What happens if the groundhog sees shadow? CNN
The Groundhog Day is celebrated on the second day of February in cities and towns of US and Canada. The most popular celebration of this day is in Punxsutawney, where a groundhog named Phil is removed from the shelter of its den in a tree trunk. According to tradition, if Phil sees its shadow, there will be six more weeks of winter in North America. The Groundhog Day has religious origins. The history of this day started with Candlemas Day (a holiday in the Christian religion). The participants of this day said that if the sky was clear that day, the winter would be long. Then, the Romans brought this tradition to Germans. Germans didn't use a marmot, they used a hedgehog. Later, the hedgehog was replaced by a groundhog.
ResponderEliminarIn my opinion, this tradition isn't reliable, because I don't think the groundhog knows what time we will have in winter or how long it will last. I think the weather can change at any moment of the day and for example, if today is raining, tomorrow can be sunny. However, we must respect all traditions from all over the world. =)
